At Coit Tower in San Francisco there are many murals depicting life in San Francisco around the time of the Great Depression. These Murals, not surprisingly, were painted in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project.
This one, by Frere Vidar, is entitled "Department Store." It surrounded a tiny window, which, as you can see, the artist used to look like a bookshelf. The writeup of this mural is above, and below.
"Available for purchase are fabrics, toys, wines, and music. Shoppers rest at the lunch counter where the special is advertised at 25¢"
