I was out at lunch today and noticed a gentleman wearing a USS Indianapolis hat and shirt.
After finishing my meal, I went to thank him for his service. He recounted his service on the USS Indianapolis and gave me an autographed card with a short history on the ship.
He is the last USMC survivor of the USS Indianapolis and to my surprise lives in my local area.
Anyone not familiar with the USS Indianapolis story, I recommend that you take a few minutes to read the story.
The ship itself was recently in the news as it's final resting place was discovered and photographed.
That is so awesome that you got to meet him! I saw a documentary a while back about the USS Indianapolis and he was on it.
An older man that I once knew, (he is deceased now) was a backup sailor that was supposed to take the place of a sailor set to depart on that dreadful voyage because he had gottten sick and was running fever. At the very last minute, the sick sailor recovered and did depart on the Indianapolis, so the backup was not needed.

Watching the news on Friday night I was saddened to see that MR Harrell had died this past week.
He was 96 and the last surviving Marine from the Indianapolis.
