Baldwin Brass hurricane candle holder

This is a Baldwin Hardware Co. candle holder made of brass which is very finely finished. It is made to hold a candle and a glass shade in the center. It is unmarked and has no label, probably missing a thick felt pad on the base.

This had been at an upscale thrift shop in a town about 60 miles from where I live, so I don't make it there too often and it has been there for a couple of months. I had looked at it in previous visits but was not very impressed as it looks pretty odd. Today, I just happened to tap the round brass plate and it gave out a deep rich sound similar to ringing a gong which lasted for about 12 seconds, and I was hooked and paid $5 for it. It is 8 1/4" tall by 10" wide including the handle. The "gong" is 7" in diameter. The handle seems to work by wrapping your hand around the handle and putting your index finger under the flat tab at the end. It is an ugly/elegant fun thing.
