The second piece of Welz from my road trip, this quirky Victorian vase is made from three layers of cased glass, clear over pink swirling stripes, with a white interior. It measures 13 cm tall, 6 cm across the top rim, & 6.5 cm across the applied footed base.
Welz certainly invented some odd shapes for their vases, & this one is no exception. A truncated, conical top slots into a triangular body, atop three leaf shaped feet. Each of the vase's three sides feature the familiar Welz daisy in an oval cartouche.
How could I resist it's oddball charm?
Welz ..................... meets George Ohr ( odd ball Pottery pieces )
I had to look up George Ohr - & I can see what you mean, antiquerose...his pieces were very quirky, & many look well suited to be made in glass, the forms are very fluid. Thanks for expanding my knowledge!
New shape, old medallion (for me anyway)! Great find, IronLace, I love it.
Sweet. You could do such a great still life/window display/exhibit. You could do a whole display were all the different glass pieces were used, to look maybe like a seascape or something like it. Some could look like groups of underwater creatures etc. Swathes of color, and some great photography. Sorry if this does not makes sense.
Many thanks, sklo42, yes that Welz medallion is their trademark of sorts. Excited to know that it's a new shape to you as well! And what a reasonable price it was too. :-)
Had more unbelievable finds today as well that will be posted on the weekend. How I adore shopping second hand. Really, the only new stuff I buy is food, LOL.
Rockbat, I totally get what you're saying...I am planning some more themed group shots in the near future...
