What is this and what is it worth?

We are remodeling a 19o1-1910 Victorian home. We have found items that we do not know what they are or what they are worth. This particular item we can not find online nor can anyone tell us what it is or what it is worth. We have been told we have a rare piece here but who really knows. We just want to know what it is called and what it was used for. This house had 5 fireplaces all coal burners at one time. We have found lots of coal in the yard as well as in the walls. The coal dust is horrible. We would greatly appreciate any information you can give us on this. One was still attached to the fireplace itself and one was found in a closet under the steps. We are excited about learning about the era. We are trying to keep the era of the house the best we can. Thanks to anyone who can help.
