Tall Welz Life Lights and Welz Candle Lamps

Image one.....I now think these taller Welz pieces (21 cm./8 inches) are most likely life lights too. That is to say, small lights probably to comfort young children, when going to sleep alone in the dark. As all life lights they too would have used oil and a floating wick.

Image two.....This shows a selection of the more commonly found Welz life lights. Both types were eventually superseded by candle lamps, fairy lamps and Christmas lamps, all of which used candles.

Image three.....Here are Welz candle lamps in commonly found Welz décors. I've also included spare parts to show the two parts clearly. These may possibly be matched with their other halves at some time..... if I'm lucky!

Image four.....This image was provided for me by IMASapp as part of a post I did on Welz candle lamps in another forum. At that time IMASapp (another C.W. contributor and expert on fairy lamps) commented that the pedestals were so alike as to have come from the same source i.e. Welz. I'd have to agree on that. Like my examples, both parts of his blue example have fine horizontal ribbing. In my examples the candle sits inside the bowl. In the blue example the candle sits directly on the pedestal, and the top is a shade.

The link below is a long read but very informative. The author suggests that of the two, candle lamps and life lights, the life lights are older. Looking at them I think that conclusion is reinforced by their style and shape. The candle lamps have none of the ornamentation of the life lights, a style so well loved in the earlier part of the Victorian era.
