    IronLace
    (928 items)

I was very pleased to add this special piece to my collection, as glass wall pockets are rarely seen, & more often than not, damaged. This Victorian one, by Davidson of Gateshead, is perfect.
Made from their Primrose Pearline glass, which contains uranium & glows under UV light, it also has an intense opalescence. It measures 17 cm in length, & 10 cm across the top opening.

Very Victorian. It would be nice to see, what kind of flowers this might have held. I picked a handful of Lupins for my mother this weekend. They are in a vintage glass vase on her hutch.

Never seen a wall pocket quite like this! Great to be in such excellent shape for its age!

Many thanks, rockbat...yes, it's fascinating to imagine the posies that old vases like this held in the past. The lupins sound lovely, what a pleasant gift. They are such a nice, old fashioned flower that one doesn't see much of these days.

Thanks also, Mrstyndall! I have been trying to get one of these for a long time, & the persistence paid off at last. I do have another Victorian pressed glass wall pocket, but it has some (repaired) damage.

This is great IronLace, I love Wall Pockets too! :^D I have mainly Pottery, and only a few Glass Wall Pockets! :^)

Weird and neat in that very outlandish Victorian way. What organic thing is it supposed to represent? I am very unsure.
I guess it's been moulded, and what a mould that would have been! A great addition to your wall vases!!

Many thanks, billretirecoll, glad you're enjoying it! Wall pockets are fun to collect & make a great display...I have quite a lot of ceramic ones which belonged to my late mother, & now have 6 glass ones. The glass wall pockets are so hard to find, though!

Racer, weird & neat is right up my alley! :-)
I believe that the design is based on a shell with branches of coral. The other Victorian glass wall pocket I have, by Burtles & Tate, is also based on a shell - like form, with a twig handle.
I must add that the mould work on much Victorian pressed glass, particularly the great firms from the north of England, is an artform in itself. The mould - makers obviously had great skill & true artistic sensibility to create such masterpieces of design...

Cheers MALKEY, knew you'd appreciate this one, being from the home of such great pressed glass yourself. Pieces like this are the pinnacle of pressed glass in my opinion. I would love to get an example of Sowerby's Aesthetic Green, though...it's on my bucket list...
