I bought this beautiful chair at an antique store, out in California. It is a Northwind chair, approximately 136 years of age. It's one of my favorite pieces. I believe these were used in parlor rooms. The grotesque was believed to scare evil spirits away. This particular face I believe is that of the Green Man.

I love these and seen a lot in the homes in England. I always think they were carved at a lot of furniture makers who often strived to create something of their own furniture. I rekon a lot of these had Irish craftsmen as it is so close to what was happening in Irish Chippendale furniture. They often had a nice finish showing the grain of the wood, but this one they fiddled with that by painting white. Gorgeous piece however !~
