This is an 1880- 90s loose tintype of a young girl.

The rug or blanket used to cover the chair has an interesting pattern.

I'd appreciate feedback on the origin of the rug/ blanket from anyone with knowledge of 19th century textiles.

    Thanks in advance!

Very interesting indeed! Looks Native American...maybe even Mexican but Native American is my first thought. Let me look into that a bit. What makes it somewhat questionable , well, my gut tells me the baby is no doubt mixed race. I'll see what I can find and if my thoughts are correct.

Looks like they have been dubbed as "banded" blankets. Yes, Native American. Did not find one exactly like yours but the ones I saw were from the Southwest. I think your best bet may be to check the Southwest Museums. That's where you may find one very close if not the same pattern.

That child looks Apache! A very good possibility from New Mexico.

Thanks for the suggestions on the blanket/ rug-- I will take a look soon.

I don't see any sort of Native American look to the child.

Take a peek at an old photo of Geronimo. This may even be a little boy.
