....Just realized this picture is not a photo.....what is it, a charcoal portrait? It is very alive looking and we didn't question that it was not a photo until just now. I had to come back and edit my posting to change the word photo to picture.....
I just found this large 16"x20" victorian looking picture under the exposed print in a very beautiful ornate wood frame purchased at Goodwill, (Seriously). I liked this picture more than the print that was added to the front at some point. The picture fits the frame properly. It looks really old with moisture damage and spots. The moisture damage on the right appears to be in the shape of the frame so it might not be moisture but acidic.
The frame measures 27.5"x31" outer edge (it's quite large as measured 16"x20")
The wood on back is very dark brown and rough cut. The glass is slightly wavy.
I am curious if someone might know the age of the picture based on type of art, frame or clothing.
I am grateful for your time..
Picture #4 is what remains of the frames that were donated to Goodwill, with this frame.

It is a photograph. These are called charcoals by many collectors.

It is actually an enlargement of another photograph. As part of the enlarging process, many details were lost. Those lost details were then added to the image by the photographer or artist employed by the photo studio.

This type of image was very popular in the late 19th century. I would think that your image is 1880- 90s time period.

While the water damage makes the image itself worth very little, your frame looks fantastic. If the condition of the entire frame is as good as the part shown, you have a very desirable frame. Of course edge damage/ missing pieces will also detract from desirability.

Scott I really appreciate it. Thankfully, the frame is nearly perfect with good corners and that is why I purchased it. Not often do you find frames like this one at Goodwill. I picked out the cheapest of several from the same donation. I will attach a picture of the other stack of frames that I saw still there today. They are chipped up but have great old glass in them. I am tempted to purchase them as well.

as far as identifying people in anonymous photos with no written clues - you are fishing in a very big pond! but it's fun guessing!
