Found Thisbe frame did beauty at my Testore today and have no idea what its history could be. It almost appears as if the gentleman is wearing a type of French uniform and at closer inspection appears as if he is asking for the woman’s jewelry. A text then bottom of the print is the word “Country” but it is positioned to the right so appears as if a previous word I sent missing. As you can see from the back removing the print from the frame will destroy it. Any thoughts on this piece?
The mans' beard is fake. He has dark hair and dark eyebrows. There's no evidence of her handing anything over to him, nor evidence that his left arm & hand are touching hers. The photo has deteriorated in that particular spot, (as it has over a lot more of the photo. The man seems to have his left elbow up, and his hand touching his face? There is a box on the table, which may contain jewelry, but it's not clear that he's asking for her jewelry.
Perhaps the photo can be restored, and all shall become clear.
p.s. I don't see a problem taking out the print, if it's done by someone who knows what they're doing.
We just had several frames come into Goodwill in Houston that looked very much like the could have been from the same time and with the same detail. They all had old prints in them and had wavy old glass. I love it, I don't see a beard but I see paper missing and his hand at his chin like he is thinking. He is wearing a Napoleon style hat but the writing appears to be in English. I bet it would fall apart if opened. Great conversation piece, thanks for sharing.
