I really need the help of friends here on CW. I found this sugar bowl today, and the bowl is a mystery to me. When I found it, it was very, very dirty and black. I guess, someone really loved the piece. After a first cleaning, my little bowl started to begin to look more presentable.
Here is my dilemma: The style of the bowl looks almost Art Nouveau. At least it reminds me of some other pieces of this period I have seen. The lily of the valley decorations are well made/stamped, and then applied to the piece by what looks to me like rivets. That's where the mystery starts. The inside looks machine made and, after cleaning the piece, almost like stainless steel even though it cleaned up like silver plate (I will test it with a magnet when I find it:). In my mind, stainless steel and lily of the valley don't mix that well.
There are two marks on the bottom but they are hard to make out.
Here is my question: Could my sugar bowl be a contemporary piece made to look older? Has anyone seen something like it before?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking:)
Really pretty silver sugar bowl, you did a fantastic job cleaning it just gleams. I love the lily of the valley floral engravings. Great find
Thanks so much for your kind comment, Newfld:)
Many thanks for the love, Tigra:)
It looks more art nouveau, art deco rather than conteporary, I think you need to contact a silver expert. There was a guy online at this site but cannot find him now, this seems a real score, beautiful !~
Thanks so much for your great comment, PhilDMorris. I kept looking for similar examples but so far I didn't find anything yet. I did, however, find a larger sugar bowl with an ivy flower fastened with very similar rivets. That bowl was marked and listed as American. I guess I will have to keep looking...
