In 1980 noted fashion designer Oscar de la Renta designed a new uniform for the Boy Scouts of America. He designed gowns for Jacqueline Kennedy, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift. He did the Scout uniform at no charge. I believe it debuted in 1982. It was the uniform for 28 years until the vastly inferior Centennial uniform appeared.
The main feature of this uniform is the tan shirt. Until that time the shirt was green the same color as the pants. Adds a bit of contrast. Epaulets with tabs were also added. The red tab were for Boy Scouts. They also came in handy for the Den Masters cord seen in photos 3 and 4.
The green color of the pants went from olive green to a darker green and the same color was used on the hat and the socks. Also note the red trim on the socks. I tr4ied to find the knee socks but this mid calf pair was the closest I could find. They also had a shorter set of socks that went just above the ankle.
Back to the pants in can be noted that they were shorts. Rather short shorts. Shorts did not become popular until the 1970s and prior to that there was a big push for them to wear shorts. It was even required at some camps. Since then shorts have gotten longer and then shorter just like hemlines.
There are still a few things to add such as the temporary camp patch on the right pocket. According to the patches on this scout he is a scout first class plus a patrol leader. Oops I forgot to put on the service pins but I just posted those. There would be yellow Cub Scout pin and a green Boy Scout pin.
Also something to note is that this uniform is designed to be worn with or without the scarf. Thus I photographed it with and without.
The shoes are not an official part of the uniform but I saw a uniform ad with the same shoes. Converse All Stars low tops. Period correct I believe.
He now has his service pins on in photos 1 and 4.

that uniform is 90% perfect. lol I was in the scouts in from 1982-1991. The rank on the uniform (the oval one on the pocket) would have been a first class rank so it would have been a red back ground and the round position rank were all green back ground. They switched them to khaki backgrounds in the 90's

Thank you very much cyberspaceghost. I have since put together proper 1980s shirts. The earlier patches are much more colorful. Not sure why they felt the need to change them. I must not have been paying attention when I posted it.
