Graniteware and Enamelware are basically covered with a glass coating. This coating keeps food from sticking. As it is glass or at least very glasslike it is brittle. Dropping a pan on the floor or a counter can cause a break which is usually small and on an edge. These breaks will cause rust and then a leak. Any piece of vintage graniteware or enamelware should have a spot where the coating has broken off. If a piece is flawless it is probably a reproduction thus do not buy.
How to fix these leaks? Mendents! 10Cents will save $10. $10 was a lot back in the day and the day was probably over 100 years ago. Not sure how many pieces could repaired with this kit. It doesn't have the screws that were used to hold everything together. I have a few pieces repaired with Mendets. I will see if I can find them for an exciting post later.
I love this post as the company was in Amsterdam NY. One of my old stomping grounds many many years ago. Great post. TY
