One year update. I see why whoever got rid of this chair did so. It is very uncomfortable to sit in. The construction is amazing, though. It may have been intended as a design statement as I find it to be visually very interesting and still look at it as an art piece. I found the secret to sitting in it for any length of time is to put a thick cushion on the seat. Now I sit in it every day to watch TV for a couple of hours. The cushion does detract from its visual appeal, though. I have not identified the maker...
I have a six room house and own six, now seven rocking chairs. Some are family heirlooms and some not. I just like to rock. I found this oak bent wood Amish rocking chair at Goodwill today for $16, including tax and just could not leave without it. It was an interesting challenge to get it into my Ford Focus. I think I that I had a rocker mark in my right cheek for awhile.
Its construction reminds me of how a boat is built. No maker's marks, but probably from one of the local Amish furniture makers. There are several Amish communities in my region. Probably made within the last 20 years, not an antique. It is scaled for someone my size, 5 foot 10 inches and 160-170 lbs, so for a medium sized man or a woman. A plus sized person might get stuck in this chair. It is not a really a great rocker, but a nice sitter. It takes a bit of effort to rock in it, but just so cool to look at. Going to call it a mystery only because I can't identify the maker. My photos make it look a bit out of plumb, but it is perfectly symmetrical from all angles.
I did a bit of experimenting and it rocks easily on hardwood floors, but not so well on carpet, Maybe due to the narrow rockers.
Turns out it rocks well on carpet. It just has a different balance point than my other rockers.
Beautiful chair ...what a bargain!
@lizzycbw - Thanks! I almost felt guilty paying so little for it. Almost!
Thanks for loving my new rocking chair!
