Multicolored stoneware salt cellar. It has a rich glaze that pops and the word salt is impressed in the front of container. It has a twisted handle at its top. The piece is signed but I can’t read it. I tried many possible spelling with no luck. Thanks for looking, any help with identification would be great.
I immediately thought of Hawaii's well known potter, John Bade, when I saw the first picture. He signs his work "Bade" with the word "Hawaii" written below. He signs with broad brush strokes like that but I'm having to stretch my imagination to get Bade Hawaii out of that. Google him- you could contact him thru an art gallery in Honolulu.
If it's his, treasure it!
Thanks watchsearcher for possible lead. I will look up John Bade from Hawaii, that would be great if it’s him.
Just an update on my previous comment yesterday. I have 6 pieces of John Bade's work so I compared the signatures on my pieces to yours.
I can say with certainty that you have a piece of his pottery. The first line says "Bade", second line says"Hawaii" but is very messy. He is highly regarded among artists and art lovers in Hawaii!
How did you acquire the piece?
That’s awesome Watchsearcher, thanks for all the work. Now it’s my turn to do some homework and learn about who I have. Regarding the piece found it at a thrift store super super cheap, less then a nyc train ride. I thought the glaze and the twisted handle showed a lot of skill, glad I grabbed it thanks again.
You are certainly welcome! It was exciting to give thought to this piece.
I think when you get more info, you might find that the object has a salt glaze. Since John Bade teaches (or has taught) pottery, he may have put the word "salt" on it as a teaching tool to show what a salt glaze looks like or he may have been just labeling the object as a vessel to hold salt- although, I think it's odd to store salt in an open container- especially in a humid environment. To be clever, he may have put a salt glaze on a container for salt.
Please post any info you find out!
