I have no idea what this is. It is small. 2" by 3" with five wells accessible by rotating lid. Very well made and very old. Lots of ware on the base and reactive green to UV light. Everyone I show is fascinated by it but can't come up with what it was used for. Grateful for an expert out there who can solve this mystery. Thank you!

It could be a revolving inkwell. ....so you can have different colour ink in each well, so you rotate the lid to access the colour that you want.

Thank you for pondering this with me TassiDevil. It does make sense. I had the same thought and did a short search for such an item but didn't come up with any. I will do a more thorough search now. Will post if I find anything. It would be nice to know its purpose. Been nagging me for weeks!

I just did over an hour of research and no luck. Found several faceted edge single inkwells in crystal but no multi-wells. I have puzzled over the shape of the finial and have an idea as to its shape. It could be a pen rest. Possibly on the right track!

Hi glassnutt......how frustrating! I have searched every combination I can think of!!
Yep, I thought that was a pen rest too:-)
I hope someone will come along here and confirm it for us lol:-)

Thank you for your time! I read that historically early writers used to carve wells in rocks to hold different colored pigments. I still think we are right....

Glassnutt, no worries! I just has another thought......I looked on facebook and there is a glass inkwell collectors group on there. Might be worthwhile contacting them? .:-)
