I collect Civil War books and have quite a few. Some of my favorite genre's are vintage paper back and children's books about the Civil War. I like fact or fiction, it doesn't matter, and I love cool artwork on the covers especially.
I've got some "racy" paperbacks to show today. The first one is "She Wouldn't Surrender" written by James Kendricks and published by Monarch Books in 1960. It's a "biography" of Belle Boyd, the rebel spy. Belle was the Mata Hari of the Civil War, she gathered information mostly at her father's hotel that was occupied by Union officers. Belle literally got away with murder. A Union soildier cursed and insulted her mother, so she shot him dead! A board of inquiry dismissed charges. She was a valuable and effective spy also she charmed, seduced etc. to gather information. This book is basically a lurid biography with facts thrown in. Stonewall Jackson considered her a great asset and awarded her The Southern Cross of honor. On the cover sweet innocent Belle is displaying her "asset" in a stream nude while a Union soldier approaches her. Thankfully she had a pistol concealed(?) on her!
The other three are just your typical racy fiction pulp paperbacks, I'll just list the autors, publishers and dates. They're all the same.

While I prefer fact based publications, these look like an interesting grouping of books.
The cover artwork was probably a big part of the sales on these!
One correction on Belle Boyd and the Southern Cross of Honor. The Southern Cross was a post-war recognition that was presented by the UDC, long after the death of Jackson.
The requirements were minimal-- it was not a valor/ bravery medal but simply signified service. Award to a woman would be significant, although I am not familiar with any of the specifics.
