After Bernard Instone and Norman Grant I also like to collect Jakob Bengel especially his brickwork pieces. Here I’ve been lucky to have the necklace and bracelet, a matching pair.
The pieces are not marked but you can tell they are the work of Jakob Bengel, he had a very distinctive style. The metal is chrome and the red pieces are Bakelite which was the first plastic made from synthetic components. The first patent application for modern plastic industry is often dated to Baekeland in 1907 and to the founding of his General Bakelite Company in 1910. I see Bakelite telephones, jewellery etc go for lots of money. I’m still on the look out for Jakob Bengel jewellery but it’s becoming expensive. I’ve been lucky in the past to have bought some lovely Bengel pieces at extremely good prices but these days he’s becoming popular so therefore it’s not so easy to spot his jewellery at what I consider a bargain.
This matching pair would be from the 1930s.

Yes unfortunately for me people are beginning to recognize his work which makes it difficult to find bargains. There are pocket watch chains that are sometimes long enough to make into bracelets which if your lucky to come across one you can get at a bargain. Personally I do prefer his brickwork jewellery.

Hi Karen, yes he as a very distinctive style especially the brickwork design really stand out and I can spot them a mile off. His Galalith collection I find more difficult to recognize. Thanks for passing by, it’s always nice to see you.
