Hi everyone. I've been meaning to post for this for a few days now. I found it at an antique store, along with other older oil paintings. I have not been able to locate a signature, and don't know enough to date it. I have to think it is pre-1800 with the stretcher construction, but I am guessing.
There were clearly repairs done to the painting, I see some newer staples and a possible repair to the canvas. The only clue is written on the middle stretcher in old soapstone marker the name, "Brand". Over that is, "C3". I did find a few artists with the last name Brand, dating back to the early 1700's, but I cannot be sure. Please feel free to comment on the listing. Thanks for looking!
The backing looks new, so it was probably re-lined. Re-lining often hides clues.
Yeah I agree. I can feel that it probably has been glued down. Also it looks like it was restapled to the stretcher.
Hi Brunswick. Thank you for the comment. I thought the same about Mary and baby Jesus. but who is the other child in the picture? I couldn't figure that out. Thanks again!

thanks newfld for the love
radegunder and nuts thanks for the loves.
I see a painting in a frame mounted inside another frame. As for Mary and Jesus, look for a moment at their clothing. Don't get tunnel vision.
fhr, yes I see what you are saying as far as the clothing I actually did think of that. Dutch or German? As far as the frame, I think the frame was modified so that the painting could fit inside. I guess either is possible.
What are your thoughts on the stretcher construction?
The more I look at the painting I enjoy it even more. I like how the children are draped across the mother. Together they form a continuous flowing curve starting with the mother's curled right arm and flowing down with the ripples/pleats in her dress.
I also see the fear in the older child's eyes. A concern or even jealous look. Very cool.
I also have a strong feeling there is a signature in the lower corner. I am a little nervous to remove it from the frame to look through.
