    any ideas as to what this is made from, or it's originn, no markings on it, Isn't there any body with a little knowlege on Japanese item, or maybe even read Japanese writing?

      Soapstone. Look up Japanese Lore - Monkey & Ox - or monjey on ox's back. You may find the story of what this represents. A lot of their carvings like this represent a myth or story from lore. I had to find out what a frog on a man's back was in a Chinese piece and I found the story after some searching!

      Hi it is hard to scratch jade with really good knife, soapstone you can easily but do it on bottom! you do not want to scare it. I have a goldfish sculpture and it is alabaster!
