I have been away for a while, and then right back at it.... pick this one up yesterday, 1870's barrel stave with original handles great overall exterior condition, as far as dings and dents are concerned. Lots of nifty nail work on this one. Extra wide oak slats at 3" wide verses the norm. with nail work on extra metal slat end covers. It is nice to see a little more elaborate pure zinc trunk in a dome top format, most I have seen are squarish or mild dome top & fairly plain overall. No tray in this one and only partial lid compartments. No makers name. Measures 31" long 19" deep and 27" tall. This one is very similar to the one I have listed here with the title "Early 1870's High End Fancy Nail & Leather Barrel Stave Trunk" .

Thanks Brian (greendog) And in answer Yes zinc. It is non magnetic , thus patterned zinc, as per Jim HMS as well.

OK, I was confused because, pure zinc and zinc cladded are two different things, pure zinc being non magnetic and zinc cladded, zinc over metal would be magnetic.

Hi Brian, I didn't know that there was a distinction such as that. I was just using clad in the sense of one cover over another. I will correct that and put pure zinc. Thanks again my friend for some new tidbits of knowledge for the old melon's memory banks...lol

I was just trying to be clear, Jim told me that pure zinc was probably before 1880 but wasn't used for long because it was expensive to make, they also used zinc clad or coated metal for a while, anyway a very nice trunk, greendog.

Thanks Mike78 it is nice to find some unusual out of the norm item with some age and for the age in excellent condition regardless of a few defects in this case the lock but certainly not the end of the world when it comes to trunks.........Had to drive 3 hrs one way to get it but worth every minute of it to me. overall all, the long trips works out in the wash in the end and quite frankly one would have a very hard time assembling a descent collection if you were to rely solely on the trunks being offered by the public within an hours radius..unless your population is 10 million. Well it is for me anyway living in the middle of no where. Thanks again!

Again Drill!! Great as always, read, saved and stored!! Thanks so much for the effort and assistance!! All your help with others helps keep yourself sharp doesn't it! lol
    15. Im4anythingOld, 6 years ago
Drill could very well be that machine as the indent is for sure a tear drop style. Other patents you have posted for me are either round or oval. Thanks!
