I have been collecting Maitres for over 30 years. Recently I found out that 2/3 of them were from French artists. Cheret alone had 67 (one per each 4). I decided to find out who the foreign artists were. Thereslts were surprising. Americans made up the largest group with 10 artists and 19 posters. Among them, three American women artists, the only females in the series. Alice Russell Glenny was born in Detroit and died in Buffalo and studied in France under Gustave Boulanger. . Her best known work is the cover for the Buffalo Courier: Women's Edition in 1895. Marie Louise Stowell resided in Rochester, N Y. her whole life and studied under Arthur Dow ( he is also represented in the series)
Ethel Reed is the best known of the three. She was born in Massachusetts and died in London, where she worked as an editor for the Yellow Book, presumable as a consequence of alcohol and drugs. She too was in Paris, with her mother, in 1896. She appears with two of her posters[last two pics.]
Beautiful!
