      Neil-
      "Treen" means made of wood. This knife has a molded composition, or "hard rubber," handle. Also, it is not a quill knife. It's a small novelty "figural" knife in the form of a shoe. These were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, long after feathers were no longer made into quill pens. These knives are available in just about any color you can imagine with black being the one most often encountered.
