This was discovered in a scrapbook. It's a bit larger than a quarter, and no more than an eight of an inch thick. It's hard and very light. I'm thinking it was a hard candy, similar to those hard candy hearts. Anyone know what it is and who may have made it?

I appreciate all the info! This came out of a 1930s scrapbook so I'm 100% confident of the date. There was actually other period candy in there. Its amazing what people saved! The July 4th date was a Yankees v Boston game at Boston and the scrapbook is from Worcester area, so I think the person went to the game.

Are you sure it’s not made of wood ,,,, like a Mardi Gras wooden nickel
Just a thought I don’t have the physical evidence

Oh definitely not wood. Not the right texture or look. The edges are actually worn like they were eaten away or degraded a bit over time.

Mine measures approx. 1.25" which I think is a bit larger than a modern Necco wafer and its probably 2-3x as thick as a Necco wafer, which was probably necessary to imprint the image on them.

I don't believe what you're looking at is actually gum. It sounds like the discs are cardboard, and just came packaged with some gum:

"Round player portrait discs about the size of a silver dollar
Black & White photos with printed ads on back
Distributed with chewing gum in round tin containers"

But those round things are still cool!
