Here's an old painting i found today. The painting is 6 inches by 8 inches and shows a fair amount of age - 19th century would be my guess. there is a label on the back which says: Papier Mache Tablet for Oil Painting along with some other stuff - in old, fancy script. Any info appreciated!
Am I seeing things or is this signed COX in the lower left corner?
i think you are seeing things! you almost got me seeing things too, but i was seeing an S and possibly an R and a small A. but i don't think so. this is a very nice painting regardless. you can see it in the quality of the reflections and the sky. it's very dirty, so it's a little hard to see.
the writing on the back says:
Papier-Mache Tablet for Oil Painting
This consists of a thin sheet of Papier Mache prepared on the surface similar to Artist' Canvas ....... [can't read the rest].
Very nice. Definitely needs a clean. If it is varnished, it should clean up nicely.
This reminds me of many paintings I've seen of Grand Manan.
Grand Manan is an Island in the gulf of Maine.
thank you kwqd and Caperkid! yes, it does remind me of Grand Manan.
i cleaned it up a bit w/ q-tips and a very diluted mix of warm water and dishwashing soap. the first pic shows the cleaned up version.
