I won this off ebay. I think it is from about 1870-80. At first i thought it might be Minton, then Burmantoffs, and now i'm pretty sure that it is by Theodore Deck - because of the fine detailing under the glaze and the variable turquoise glaze.

      Marks are important.

There is a number on the bottom of one hoof - '25' - in a Victorian script. i'll bet that it is Burmantoffs - thank you Malkey!! i knew i had seen a lot of this turquoise blue pottery before!
    5. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 6 years ago
i just checked it more carefully and there is a small '457' and a large '1825' on the base.

on the base of one hoof.

can you post pics of the marks
    8. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 6 years ago
i just added a photo of the numbers under the hoof and a closeup of the back of the head, so you can see the fine detail under the glaze. it's really amazing!
    9. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 6 years ago
i think that the head is a spill vase.

i couldn't find anything Burmantoff's made with the level of detail in my Lamassu's details - of fabric, and physical features - face, particularly. it really haunts me - in a good way - more like enamored with...
    11. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 6 years ago
even the detail in the feathers.
    12. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 6 years ago
after exploring the detail under the glaze, i think that this is French and made by Théodore Deck.

I agree, appears to be Deck. Look at similar Deck piece:

Hi ho2cultcha, I also have an interesting turquoise glazed piece marked on the base with a small '457' and a larger '1221'. I can't attach photos here, I will start a new "Unsolved Mistery"

    17. Spackova Spackova, 5 years ago
cho2cultcha, I think that your figure is numbered 1225 not 1825. Take another look. Mine is marked 1221 in the same style lettering and, as in yours, the turquoise glaze pools in the impressed number indentations.
