Can anybody tell me where this basket may have been made. I had thought it was North American Indian but I've trawled through hundreds of photos and can't find anything that fits with the design and the construction of the base and the rim. It looks to be well used and there is some damage and I think its very old. It's about 8 inches in diameter. I have a small collection of baskets and picked this one up quite recently at a car boot sale.
No, not Native American. It's African, made by Tonga women in the Binga District of Zimbabwe.
A web search for "Binga basket" will confirm, and will show examples of this distinctive style of round basket with a square start.
CanyonRoad. Thank you so much for the information. Much appreciated. I also make baskets so I am always very interested in the workmanship, construction and materials used in examples like this.
