I inherited these 2 Kitten paintings from a beloved Great Aunt. They are by Bessie Bamber, an artist from Liverpool or Birkenhead ( depending on where you read!). Very little is known about her, she was born in 1870, but no one seems to have any other info about her. Most of her paintings are from the early 20th century, and were mostly of cats, painted on porcelain or opaque glass, and sometimes boards. Mine are on porcelain or glass, not sure which as they've never been out of the frame. the only downer is that she usually used stuffed kittens for her models, Ugh!
I see on the internet that she worked with "stuffed animals"...can it be that she worked with toys (hoping here for a "yes") and not actual taxidermied kittens...?
I think in the early 20th century, people wouldn't bat an eyelid at taxidermy! It's not something I like though!
I thought the same as Anna when I looked the artist up on the 'net, it was most likely taxidermy as the cats look very real for stuffed animals. Still in all, her cat paintings were beautiful
Too bad she is already dead.
