Couldn’t resist buying these. Please post if you think you know who made them! ROCKET and SATURN glass set, bookend size and HEAVY! Saturn slightly tipped. Both have a hollow bottom - rocket: a pencil fits in the hollow, Saturn: one’s finger fits in the hollow. These have quite a bit of detail ... rivets on the rocket, bumps & rings on Saturn. They glow under black light too. Bottom is smooth shiny glass unlike the other surfaces. No signature as far as I can see (darn!) ... can’t find any similar pieces anywhere, having done extensive online searching. Perhaps student work or “end of day” non-production pieces? Unique and fun!!! Had to show you!!! Thanks.
Glad you share my enthusiasm for this funky set, keramikos! Thanks for posting a comment.
I just created an account just so I could add information about the rocket. Mine has a professional looking, nicely styled, clear oval sticker (with gold printing) between two of the fins near the bottom. It reads (line for line):
HAND CAST BY
LIGHTHOUSE
GLASS (this word is in reverse printing)
NEW ORLEANS
I bought two of these about 10 years ago, online, I think some sort of a closeout item, one for myself and one to give to a friend. I was unaware of the existence of the Saturn, I'll have to look for that one now!
For some reason I never rec’d notification of the last two comments; was looking at my old posts and found them! So thank you Robin50 and keramikos for the tips! Mystery solved. There is a blue set of miniature furniture by Lighthouse Glass currently on ebay listed at $39.99 ... interesting. But I haven’t found much else yet. Thanks again!
And I never got notified about kerimikos' comment directly following mine. But I did receive notification of your (JoeyC) comment today; I'm glad to see activity and more info in this thread!
I am the original designer of these objects. They were made for the Lighthouse Glass company out of New Orleans (now closed). The actually made it to the NY Times as the coolest bookends ever made :)
Thanks to everyone who commented & marked this set "Love It" (20 people!). Hey TimTate nice to hear from you, THE designer of these amazing objects. I apologize for being slow to post; I'm not logged in here often. A few questions: 1) What year/ years were Rocket/ Saturn produced? 2) How were they made and who produced them? 3) How many were made? 4) What happened to the molds, do they still exist? 5) Were they ever named? -- THANKS!!! PS I bought my set at an antique store in Akron OH.
TimTate ... would like from you again.
Oh hey ... didn't think your CW signup name "TimTate" meant your real name but on a whim I googled it ... and there you are on Wikipedia! Very cool! Some great accomplishments; congrats on all the successes you've had! - Joey
