I found this at Goodwill yesterday. they've changed the format at the goodwill near me. now, everything is poured into bins which people scramble to and dig through and then everything is charged by weight. lots of people showing up for it. sure makes things cheap. lots of chaos though!

Not sure of the history of the Goodwill, or where it started, but it's huge in the Pacific Northwest. I have a cousin from Tacoma who was recently visiting and mentioned that the Goodwill is allegedly noted as being charitable organization with a very poor "profit-to-charitable use" ratio, meaning that a large portion of their profits are going into pockets instead of projects.
In fact, I read an article recently about the Goodwill transitioning many of their brick-and-mortar locations to strictly bin style operations due to claims of complications and costs associated with employing the staff necessary to operate in the traditional format...I thought that was part of what their charitable effort was...helping provide springboard/transitional employment to those unable to find work elsewhere?
I suspect the new format also has something to do with the meteoric rise of the Goodwills online auction site.
Anybody want to weigh in on this?

Also, Ho2cultcha, E.B. Wilds you? If not, would you recommend them?

yes, that is me. i would not repeat those rumors about the Goodwill or any nonprofit without doing serious investigation first. a lot of people who have very little opportunity whatsoever and nearly zero options get their life training there. that's very difficult work, but not a lot of people clamoring to do it in their place and their services are really needed these days.
