The peoples Republic of China is from 1949 to present. Most labeling codes ( not just for trunks, but printed paper up to cars, usually contained a date in one form or another be it last 2 digits or a letter code as part of a sort of serial number. This code number is very basic and one could easily assume the first three digits pertaining to the style or image on trunk or the size of the trunk or both contained in the first three digits, thus leaving the last two digits for the date of this trunk being 1983. I have seen this trunk so many times through out my life and is very common and I am sure still being made and sold today.

Another point regarding the label, is in fact the label itself. The printing font, color, style of label being in white with typical rounded corners which comes from an obvious modern peel and stick sheet. I have stationary labels and supplies from the turn of the century to the 70's the more you handle and see these items within the context of any specific decade, the more obvious which decades to disqualify as a potential candidate so to speak. The only other number in the coding for a possible date would be the 65, but the label style etc. as mentioned clearly throws that one out the window, leaving again just the 83 for your date which most certainly fits, with all things considered.
