When purchased this wooden model boat (dory) was said to be an antique floating bait bucket or minnow pail that was towed along side the fishing boat. (antique Mass. Bait Bucket, late 1800's). It is over three feet long, made of oak, and perforated about the hull with many drilled holes. The top hatch opens for access below deck. It appears to have the old square nails fastening it together. Construction is detailed and accurately fitted. Although not actually tried, I suspect it sinks up to the top deck when in the water, thus keeping the bait alive. Any help to identify this old model boat will be appreciated. Paul A.
No responses yet, do you this this is a one-off item and did early fishermen make their own bait boxes?
