This measures 4.5 high x 5" wide, including the handle. Thrift shop find from a few years ago. Kind of a strange thing to find in Central Illinois. I've never been able to find a glass to fit it. Not sure if it is silver or some alloy of silver, or not. I think at one time I found a similar one on ebay that explained what the image on it is and what the writing means, but I have forgotten both things.

Found another one and it looks like it is a cupronickel cup holder to celebrate the 850th anniversary of the city of Volodymyr. Made by the Kolchugino Plant in the Vladimir Region of the Soviet Union. Volodymyr was founded in 1108 and its 850th anniversary was in 1958. It was once the capital of Russia. This probably dates from around 1958, then.

I should just add that these tea cup holders were predominately used by the Railroad Transportation Authority and could be found mainly on the passenger trains. The old ones are collectible now as an item of Soviet nostalgia or railroad relic.
The glass that will fit it is 250 ml and it's this one:

Thanks, AnnaB! All of the glasses I can find are pretty expensive. Most are cut crystal. This one on ebay is still $20, including shipping. I carried this around to thrift shops for awhile trying to find one that would fit. I may have to bite the bullet and unclench my fist and spend some money to finally get one!

This one was brought to mind because I was watching the Hunt for Red October last night and the senior officer who got a letter from Sean Connery's character was drinking from one of these!

Found a cut crystal one on ebay for $12.59 and free shipping! So, can you just pour hot water directly into this glass? Does the metal absorb the heat or do you have to put a spoon in the glass before pouring hot water into it?

Also found these and bought two.

      Ready to drink tea!

kwqd, cool purchase, now you are ready to drink tea like a real party leader! =) The podstakannik is supposed to protect you from burning yourself on a hot glass. I would be hesitant to pour hot water into a crystal glass though. The faceted glass i sent you is made of thick glass, and these glasses surprisingly could handle piping hot tea served on Soviet trains. It's ridiculous how much they cost on ebay provided that each household had dozens of them because their primary purpose was for vodka or moonshine LOL

Jus an update on the glasses for this podstakannik. The crystal glasses fit better because they are not tapered and sit very solidly. The traditional tea/vodka glasses are tapered toward the bottom and are bit wobbly. I am sure that they would not tip or fall out, but the crystal glasses "feel" better.

kwqd, it looks amazing, I now I'm late to the party, but would you sell it? I have a identical one, only difference is the theme; mine has the Russian Revolution from 1917 on the front of it. If not where did you find his? On ebay there are none of this design

LE: I just saw where you bought it from...
