At first i thought that this was veneered with a very thin piece of birch, but then i thought plastic except that it looks a little different. Could it be veneered in bakelite? that's what it really looks and feels like. any info appreciated!

It could be a souvenir box which came with tea in, or something like that. I have a wooden rectangular box at home somewhere, which looks similar, which hubby brought home to me from China. I think my box still has tea in - maybe 20 years old! I’ll have to dig it out when I get home and see what it’s like!

I've put my tea box on so that you can compare. Mine is much smaller and not such an interesting shape!
