Doubt it was used for milking.

It does, however, seem suited for sitting "backward" (facing the rail) and storing/holding something in that extra piece. Things like milking, tailoring, painting, working on a vertical/horizontal surface, etc do come to mind, so I could see why someone would suggest that. I wonder if that "backrest" is designed that way (wide/curved) for aesthetic or purpose (like a tray).

On a side note, in searching for something similar, reading chairs are rather interesting, as well. Supporting the idea that not all chairs are intended for "frontward sitting".

Ok, last guess before I move on. You might look at antique smoking chairs (the ones that were intended for "sitting backward" and resting your arms on the "back rail" while you smoke.

Weird idea kinda along the tailoring line of thought -- maybe the chair is made for someone to sit on one *side* (or the other) of its seat instead, such that the flat/wide/low "backrest" could hold small tools/materials/etc. conveniently while they otherwise work at some task...??
