Postcard from 1912 reads " When the evening shades are fallen, and the telephone is dumb" I don't why the telephone is dumb though.

That means "can't speak"....like the phrase we no longer use, thank goodness, referring to someone who could not hear or speak, they were said to be "deaf and dumb".
Seen as very unkind in today's world but common in the not-so-distant past!
