This is the 3rd item I bought at the car boot sale on Sunday. I have been trying to find out about it since then. The seller was sure it was very old, and made in China, but I have my doubts as to where it was made. I would have liked it to be porcelain or bone china, but it has no translucence to it, so it is probably earthenware, and it has a few gritty bits and holes from the firing. It is hand painted, again not good quality painting, but I love the picture of the lady with a fan and child peeping out from behind her skirts. I did think it was a man at first, but I've decided it's a lady. The saucer is quite deep and has no indentation for the cup. This cup and saucer is probably from the first half of the 19th century, but I have not found out where and when it's from yet, but I think it may be English.
I agree with you. Hard to say when and who exactly.
Beautiful!
