Hello everyone.
So happy when this brooch arrived today. Finally found one online in Australia for a price I could afford!
Seller described it as Art Deco silver & marcasite blue birds brooch and being 900 silver with faceted marcasites! No mention was made of our mystery maker's mark which is known as the "Etruscan Urn" by the followers of Kyratango's collection of these pieces!!
As can be quite clearly seen I hope in the photos, the stones are in fact paste, and i am pretty sure the birds are swallows and they have tiny red eyes too.
The only thing I am not sure about is the time frame for this brooch.........the seller thought 1930s..............I was thinking more early 1900...........
Either way I think it is just adorable and love it very much:) Hope you enjoy seeing this little treasure, thanks, Judy.
Super beautiful birds on branch design Judy, lovely deco detailing, what an exciting find!
The detailing of the bird is just so exquisite, super find !~
FANTASTIC! You finally got one :-D
Yes, swallows, and not after 1910's!
This is the first I saw of two birds on a twig, though the swallows are a recurrent subjet they used.
Describing pastes as marcassites is not rare, as describing marcassites as rose cut diamonds, LOL!
Very nice Judy.
Hi Jenni, thank you, glad you enjoyed seeing this brooch:) I am very happy:)))
Thanks so much Phil for the wonderful comment, so great of you to take the time to visit which is very much appreciated :)
Aw, thank you Thomas, it really is a lovely surprise when it happens:))
Yayy Pascale!! Thank you! I'm still smiling!! It is the dearest little brooch.......only measures 3.5cm x 2cm approx.
Have to love wrong descriptions lol.
I have still been researching and came across another maker of imitation diamond jewellery called Barrios Diamond Company. I found references to them in 1902 in Chicago USA, 1904 in Sydney Australia and 1906 in Melbourne Australia. There were some pictures, very blurry, but you might like to have a bit of a look and see what you think.......
Hi Jean, lovely to have you visit, thank you:))
On the wing(?) of bird opposite the one with "909" mark, there are letters scratched(?) that to me, look like m/n. Enlarge the image. Difficult to tell if second part is a complete word.
So adorable!! I was wondering about the etched letters too!

This link shows the relationship between Barrios and the Parisian diamond company in Australia.
Hi Gillian and Poire, thanks to you both for the comments, I did notice those etched letters and I don't know what if anything they might mean......perhaps just reference letters for the style of the brooch?? Goodness knows lol:))
Thanks for the link, Judy! Will have a look!!!
The scratched letters are usually a code a jeweller mark on a piece he repaired :-)
Beautiful!
Thanks Pascale:)
