Here is another one that was in the box. I am not sure where this came from and whether or not it would be considered a doll but it’s made of wood and hand carved and painted (I think) but I just am not sure what to make of it. Any help is greatly appreciated. It’s about 10.5 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide.
This one is SO strange...looks to be sleeping or even deceased. The positions of the "hands" up as if to say, "stop" or "enough".
The markings on the legs and body, who knows? Could represent designs on clothes or wounds on the body.
I hope you post a follow-up if you ever find the answer.
Thanks again for your comments Watchsearcher. I know it really is strange. I almost feel like she should be holding a baby or animal..hopefully she is not depicting death LOL but at this point who knows..Clearly these people had collected from all over the world and they even numbered and labeled them (only to be tossed in a box and sold) but I know that’s how the cookie crumbles
Yes, our prized collections may be meaningless to our heirs; just a bunch of stuff grandma collected! They would rather have the money.
Did the numbers and labels give any clues at all?
At least they collected interesting stuff! The folks who owned my house previously traveled extensively and collected rocks wherever they went. There were big boxes of rocks in my basement when I moved in. Only a very few were marked in any way. Some ended up in my garden, probably guaranteed to give some future archaeologist or geologist a hissy fit if they ever do a dig on my property. Your doll is probably a tourist item, but it could be in the tradition of locally made dolls, made by the locals for their children. I'm no doll expert, but I know there are some on CW and hopefully they can help.
BTW, love your avatar.
