My grandmother always told me she took this from her uncle when she was young...maybe in her 20s. Said it offended her. Noticed she always showed it to people when she was younger. When she passed away, it was left to me. The crank makes the woman do a little belly dance. I also have a newer one, from the 40s, of a white woman. I've been able to find lots of these made of caucasian people, never black figures. I would like to know when these were first made?? Are they worth anything? And is mine rare, since I've never found another black one? Have now purchased two more. Harder to find, maybe not so rare....
I have this same one, which is also the only black one I've been able to find. I have maybe 8 variations on white belly dancers and one that's a tan tansluscent. These were sold as souvenirs and novelties, others were imprinted with the name of a company and handed out as advertising. There is a chapter on these crank girls in the book "Hula Dancers and Tiki Gods" by Chris Pfouts.
Thank you John!!! Do you have any maker marks on the back of your black doll?? I would love to find out the maker of it. I'm so amazed that someone else out there has this one...never been able to find her lol
I have one that is a mermaid. Must say she has pretty good hip movement.
This one cracks me up cause her lips smear on the plastic, and she's got excellent movement. I also bought one off of ebay from a person who's dad had it in WWII. I just wish I knew the age on my black one! I'd love to find another one
I have one too, I will post it soon
Same design, Deanteaks?! If so that is AWESOME!! I think I'm going to start collecting these "pretty" ladies. I find the idea of them so humorous!
Only difference between ours is the background
I've never been able to find a value, as until a couple of days ago the only black doll I saw was mine and the original response to this post.
Just got two more. :)
