I have had this chain for a number of years and know nothing about it other than it is Sterling silver. I think the birdlike object is meant to be a dove so maybe it is a 1960's hippy peace necklace. Does anyone know?

Looks like a Dove too me. Could be a Stylised Religious Dove -Peace - Christian ?? Just throwing that out there

I'm a silversmith and make things all the time that really have no meaning. Artist are weirdos.

Another thought I had was this could be a
psychedelic mushroom/dove combining the two into one. Peace, love, drugs, antiwar 1960's

The dove represents the Holy Spirit in Christian denominations. The Christian dove is commonly displayed pointing down, sometimes surrounded by a flame going up. I would guess that this is related to that, but it could be a secular symbol of peace or, as flashlarue states, it could be "just a bird" (or symbol with personal meaning to the artist). I can't read the mark in the image, but certainly that would give you a clue.

Sorry, I bet that stamp just says sterling, so I'd do more research on mid-century Christian jewelry in an attempt to find a match.

Of course the descending dove the sign of Christ's baptism. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Being that it could date back to when Sterling was starting to be used to mark 0.925 silver.
