I purchased this from an alabaster shop in Europe in 1967. Italian alabaster triangular gargoyle head ashtray. Back then I was collecting ashtrays and this is one of the few remaining. It is old and discolored but I was told to never try cleaning alabaster except with a damp cloth.

I wanted to post this before I decide where it will find a new home.

Very cool gargoyle design ashtray! Also appreciate the advice on cleaning alabaster, I have an older yellowing statue, it's too bad they discolor with age

Newfld I doubt you will ever see many ashtrays that weigh 4 pounds. No fear of this one tipping over or sliding off a table.

With the gargoyle faces, you could up-cycle it to hold a few pieces for Halloween candy.

Alabaster does not like water. I have used furniture polish oil, it does well with that.

PhilDMorris - thanks for the info I will give that a try on a small place where it won't show and see how it goes. This and my big Buddah both could sure use a cleaning.

it looks like an Italian take on a Chinese piece.

ho2cultcha - they are well noted for that. My Buddha is also Italian alabaster. They produce all kinds of Asian pieces. The craftsmanship is great if you don't mind an Italian Buddha. Not sure about how the Pope feels about it :)
