I pulled this out of the garbage yesterday. As you all can see the condition of the painting is poor. But it is all in one piece... A historic home in Englishtown, NJ was being emptied. Outside there were old items, mainly pictures and picture frames. Prints, student oils, nothing great. Then I came across this one. I could see it was an old oil painting so I lifted it into the car. It is very large and the frame is massive. Probably was a nice frame prior to decomposing. When I got it home I wiped away a little dirt and saw the name and date.
The signature appears to be, "L. Lippe 1829." Anyone else have any thoughts? CW members have been great in the past at deciphering signatures, I would be so grateful. Once I ID the artist I can make a decision about whether to have it restored. Thank you all!
I think Lippe or Lippi. I found artists by both names, but none active during this period. Only one with the first initial "L", Lorenzo Lippi 1606-1665. Check http://www.askart.com for a list of artists. Sometimes families were artists for generations so one of these may be a clue. Looks European to me, maybe Italian.
hi kwqd. Thank you for looking! yes I came up with the same results. Thank you for the link. It is a shame because had it been a listed or known artist I would have considered restoring the piece. Right now I have nothing into it which is cool. Thanks again for the help.
