Couldn't pass this little Rare & interesting piece up. No maker name no interior. The trunk measures 26 1/4 long x 14 1/4" deep x 13.5 tall. It has unique features for sure, as I have yet to find another even similar with the no metal banding & leather valance/ dust band. Also as you can see, It sports a pile of the unique round solid brass studs. The studs measure 5/8" wide by 1/4" tall so as you can see they are quite substantial. I am missing only two studs which I find quite amazing for the age of this piece. I may have to swap out the handle ones to have the body ones complete. The handle condition on this trunk is perfect which is again amazing to find, as the ones I have myself and others I have seen are usually fairly dilapidated. It had at one time a double leather strap hinge as indicated by the remnants remaining, and the off set notches on the body compared to the lid. This can be seen in the interior shot. I was originally puzzled by the off set when viewing the ad photos thinking maybe some switched lids or something but the in person inspection showed they are original match. It has some design in the leather and the edging was stitched thus removing the necessity for metal bands I guess. It also would have had the two wrap around straps which passed through the bottom slats which are notched for them.. It also looks to have probably has a large leather flap that covered the lock judging by the single strap remnant bottom front center and the extra holes on the lid face center. It is to me a very neat and nifty early stagecoach/ steamer trunk example even in the condition it's in. I am just guessing at the dates so any info or input would be great!!

A wonderful trunk find that you don't see very often.
I will search for the stud patent as I recall seeing it. (may take some time)

Just want to share a few early trunk patents for historical purposes. There are literally thousands of them . As we know sometimes they are the best window into the past for dating objects. Early ones tend to be much harder to find.Hope all the links post Enjoy!
