No memory of when or how I acquired this small box, about 5 by 4 inches. Not marked but the motif is definitely Japanese with Mount Fuji in the background of the scene. A small souvenir or export trinket item.
You can see the marquetry work is very shallow, and comes off easily, the colors have also faded. I think it represent the much larger compartmentalized Japanese sewing wood box, a skill they were very proficient in as their elaborate silk kimonos were all hand stiched, in fact, the tradition was to unstich them before cleaning them, and stitch them up again.
It's lovely!....I collect fountain pens and it would be perfect for storing them in! :D
I just got one of these in my aunt's stuff I inherited. The one I have is marked on the bottom- P. D. G. (And Under Made in Japan) in very little letters. Also try he colors and wood are much darker. What else do you know about it?
Its not a valuable piece but it is an old mid century novelty export from Japan, which is fun to have, I cleaned mine and discovered it is fragile, on the lid's decorated wood.
