Good Sunday to all, I must apologize in advance for not doing justice and accuracy this post deserves. Hosoda Eishi was born to a well to do Samurai family in 1756. He later served as the court painter to the Shogun Leharu. Leaving Shogun Leharu he began his private art career in the wood block or Ukiyo_E medium. His early works were of beautiful women or Bijin_ga and in the similar style of Utamaro. This mouse raiding a grape bowl is a departure from the Bijin_ga style of that period. This whimsical change is why I purchased this several years back from an online auction house. Eishi later died in 1829 and this is thought to be a 1930s reprint of his original work. Hope it makes you smile and thanks for reading.
Fascinating antique picture, so lifelike, the mouse surveying the grapes is an adorable scene
