I came across these handles that appear to be some type of lock. The soldier and dog handle pulls out and has a spring load. It pulls a metal post inward as if to release it. Does any one know for sure what this is and how old? Looks to be possibly pewter.

Interesting! How about some additional pictures illustrating what you're talking about (i.e. how it works). It appears to have some kind of mounting plate at the bottom? What does the back look like?

That looks like an oar in his hands. Are u sure he is a soldier? Why would a soldier have a dog with him?

I thought in was an oar as well. The rest eludes me.

It is definitely an old muzzle-loading shotgun. That is an old European-style stock treatment and you can see the trigger and the percussion lock on the stock. He is loading it with a ramrod. He is a hunter - that's why the dog.

Still needing a better explanation of how it works, and some more pictures.
