The scroll carving on the top portion is beautiful

You cause me to have more questions than answers for you. To begin with this looks to be a double press back as opposed to being hand carved. A hand carved chair should have chase marks which this one doesn't. Why would you refer to it as a child's rocker? You didn't provide any dimensions which would verify but this looks like it is not a children's rocker. How wide is the seat? How high is the seat from the floor? What is the measurement from the seat to the top of the crest board (carved back board)? I think we may find that you actually have a mothers chair which most people mistake for a child's chair because they sit very low.

bobby725 - I will say this but I suspect you nor anyone else here will hear it. The image is not Boreas. He was the Greek God known as the King of the north wind. His wife was Oreithyia queen of the mountain gale. The image on this chair, if you download it and rotate it may possibly be a poor attempt to be the north wind or as you put it old man of the north. An original is quite easy to spot and most, even on this site are not what is considered accurate. If you read the history behind Boreas you will get the idea.

Fhrjr2, I don't quite get the meaning of your first sentence in comment #4.

Watchsearcher It simply means that more often than not people have tunnel vision and simply ignore anything outside of that regardless of all else. What they believe is the Gospel to them whether it is right or wrong. In this instance I submit to you every face on every vintage or antique chair has had someone identify it as the north wind, old man of the north etc. There were a good many gods both carved and pressed into the crest boards of chairs. However, most will simply agree and say yup that's him without looking at the details. No offense intended.

I understand. Thank you for clarifying.
I thought it looks like a friendly bear or lion face which would make sense if it really is a child's rocker.

Watchsearcher Hopefully the young lady will supply the dimensions and we will have a much clearer idea
