This is a reproduction that looks to be a picture/poster of the Mona Lisa adhered to a stretched canvas. The size is 22" x 16". The edges of the canvas are painted to look like the paint extends to the sides of the canvas and there is a painted glaze over the entire picture with brush marks forming the hair and face to create the illusion that it was painted. I do think it's old though, as there is an old piece of paper on the back giving information on Leonardo and the original painting. And the canvas itself looks pretty old. Current day brackets hold the canvas to the frame, however, so it looks like the frame may have been added later and the frame doesn't fit very well. Either way, I can say I have a Mona Lisa.

Has anyone seen a display like this or know how old it might be? I don't think it was meant to fool anyone (sad attempt if so), but I think it's more of an informational piece because of the piece of paper with information on the back.

During one of my trips to Paris in the 1980s I went to the Louvre to see this painting, it was very impressive, they had hung it by itself on a whole wal, space, and protected it by having a guard rail all the way around it.

What surprised me was the size of it, not a large painting at all, yet the art work is fantastic, you can look at it from across the room at 3o feet, and it still affects you. I agree with you, the reproduction is not great, something with the nose I think.

Still a nice piece to have. Thanks for posting.

Yep. I've never seen it in person, but I've heard it's smaller than you would think. The repro that I have is even smaller. Thanks for your info.

They developed a technique early on in the 20th century where they could print paint marks on canvases and paper or heaviere paper stock, near cardboard. They used that technique a lot in the early 20th century and on - everything from postcards on up to painting sizes. Whatever yours is, it is in very poor condition.

Thanks Phil. It's more like a paper on canvass I think. As if the paper were glued to the canvas. Would be cool if it was directly on the canvas like in the technique you mentioned. Maybe it is and I'm missing something, but there seems to be a layer over the canvas. Thanks for the help. And yeah, terrible condition. I got it more for the novelty of it rather than to have something in great condition. And the price was right - extremely cheap.

      LITTLE KNOWN INFO.
THE MONA LISA WAS STOLEN AND REMAINED MISSING FOR 10 YEARS , WHEN FOUND WAS TESTED BY EXPERTS THAT DECLARED IT ORIGINAL BUT MANY LIKE ME STILL THINKS THE ONE NOW IN THE MUSEUM IS FAKE.
